  • The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) experienced a 32 percent decline in membership from 1965 to 1992. The church has participated in and is living through a major cultural shift. In this context this project examines the cultural shift and the generation that has come to exemplify this shift: the 'baby boomers' born between the 1946 and 1964. A similar time of anxiety and discontinuity is found in the Gospel of Matthew. The project examines two texts that illustrate Matthew's Christology and ecclesiology--the 'Great Commission' and the Beatitudes from the 'Sermon on the Mount,' Matthew 28:19-20 and 5:1-16--and compares them to find understanding and identity for mainline denominationalism. The result is a new member development program designed and based on these texts and spirituality as reflected in Matthew.
