  • As a resident chaplain in the Alcoholic Recovery Unit of Dutcher Clinic Connecticut Valley Hospital, Middletown, Conn, the author became involved with alcoholics and their family relationships. The family of the alcoholic was seldom seen at the clinic on other than superficial levels; even such limited observation demonstrated a vicious circle of anxiety and frustration. Parish ministers and family doctors often come in contact with alcoholism but fail to recognize it. This paper defines alcoholism, the nature of the disease, the effect on the individual and his family and the social and economic cost of it for our nation. It focuses on the specific alcoholic and his history together with the growth of the disease, seeks to pinpoint causes with reference to its early growth in the family of reference and its fruition in the family of procreation, discusses alcoholic life patterns in the marriage relationship and its effects on the children. Medical models, psychological models of Menninger, Blaine and Berne, and Sullivan, and a sociological model are presented, as well as the author's pastoral theological reflections on alcoholism re a Christian concept of person.
