  • The thesis of this work is that gestalt therapy is a useful tool in the pastoral care of people in chemical dependency treatment, as well as in working with their spouses or families. The thesis summarizes work done in foundations of gestalt therapy, a pastoral care model presented by Clebsch and Jaekle (healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling), and primary chemical dependency treatment (utilizing the Minnesota Model). The author then presents case illustrations dealing with an individual stuck in past history, a family with communication difficulties, a couple trapped by the past, a grief experience, and an individual seeking a sense of safety. The result of the work shows that this therapeutic method may be used with this special population.
