- Abstract
- This study describes the nature, frequency, and importance to faith of mystical experiences claimed by members of the United Church of Christ in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Data was gathered through surveys, written descriptions, and by personal interviews. The research shows that there is a wide variety of experiences, many related to death and dying, regarded as important to faith; that persons experienced paranormal events; that the classic mystical experience is rare. The report suggests clergy need to be sensitive to descriptions of unusual experiences by parishioners and recommends specific ways in which this sensitivity may be demonstrated.
