  • Recent research has shown New Zealand to be a highly secular society, and within the church scene, Methodists are more secular than other denominations. This thesis tests the degrees of secularity of all New Zealand Methodist ministers by means of a questionnaire and a follow-up interview of a small representative sample. The results show strong theological polarities, and, on average in comparison with the laity, clergy conservatism on central tenets of faith, a more liberal attitude to peripheral belief matters, and strong liberal tendencies in social and political areas. Male ministers are more traditional in belief and attitudes than female clergy.
