- The destruction of what it means to live as a biblical community by the Enlightenment triad of tolerance, individualism and relativism requires that all Christians including the Lutheran community rethink the way it encourages communities to form clear identities in the pluralistic world in which we live. I used the approach of Lutheran theologian George Lindbeck to develop an alternative way to think about Christian communities and to develop a process for reforming a Lutheran identity through what he calls a cultural-linguistic model. This approach, which I chose to reform the identity of Holy Cross Lutheran Church (Austin, Texas), places emphasis on learning the language of faith through the process of community catechesis. A key part of the process for discerning the present identity of the Holy Cross community was preaching a series of seven sermons based on themes found in Paul Hanson's The People Called. This set the context for a series of community forums, in which I used some of Clifford Geertz's insights in cultural observation to develop a survey of the Holy Cross community and the city of Austin.
