- Abstract
- The study was conducted to gain information helpful to the Division of Foreign Missions (DFM) of the Assemblies of God in improving existing training programs for first-term missionaries. Ths information was gained through a written survey of those missionaries who had completed the Assemblies of God Graduate School (AGGS) pre-field training program. The results of the survey showed a strongly favorable response to the AGGS pre-field training program, with those aspects dealing with cross-cultural communication and cultural adjustment rating the highest. Language learning was of greatest concern. The principles of andragogy employed in a non-formal setting were found to be the most effective. Training for cross-cultural service required a heavy emphasis on the development of interpersonal skills. A sense of personal identity and realistic but positive expectations before departure for the field were found to be key elements in cross-cultural adjustment.
