- This project proposes that Islam among Afican American prison inmates is a distinctively American phenomenon influenced by and dependent on Afrocentric beliefs. The project first establishes what orthodox inmate Islam is and how it is influenced by Afrocentrism. With orthodox Islam as a guide, the Moorish Science of America and the Nation of Islam are then analyzed on the same basis. African American inmate Islam is a mixture of beliefs and movements that make it difficult to define as Islam. Afrocentric influence leads to mistrust, anger, fear, and resentment of European Americans. Many African American inmates believe that European Americans have purposely conspired to discredit black accomplishments worldwide.
