This project presents a case study of Pilgrim Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, applying principles and practices drawn from this experience to the wider context of mainline Protestant decline. The project identifies sociological realities that confront local congregations, setting them within a biblical and theological framework. In describing an assessment procedure for churches in decline and a process for closing, the project proposes ways that a congregation can grieve, incorporate the loss in the ritual of public worship, evaluate the disposition of property and assets, arrange for continuing pastoral care, and interpret the reality theologically.
