  • The constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA) requires elders to be educated before they are ordained and installed as member of the session. The author's experience during twenty-five years of ministry indicated a serious lack of knowledge by persons serving in that office; therefore, a biblical and historical study of the office of elder was made. When the study was concluded, the material became part of a course of study designed for elders and deacons-elect in the Presbyterian Church (USA). The course, included in the above project, together with the comments the author received after teaching it, caused the session of the church which the author serves to petition Pittsburgh Presbytery to request the denomination to require a minimum course of training.
