  • With the revitalization of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the building of Foxwoods Casino, racial, political, economic, and cultural tensions increased in southeastern Connecticut. To promote understanding and reconciliation, some of the churches in the town of Ledyard invited tribal members to participate in an ecumenical, cross-cultural vacation Bible school. The morning children's program used commercial curricula, but the evening program for all ages focused on the theme of 'Who is my neighbor?' A greater racial, cultural, and theological diversity than in past years helped participants become more aware of the need to work for reconciliation in the community.
