Abstract
  • This project studied nine ordained clergywomen and their understanding and definitions of therapeutic and non-therapeutic touching in their ministry. The author reviewed pertinent literature -- sociological, psychological and theological -- and used questionnaires and interviews in her research. The main questions addressed the clergywomen's ages, the touching in their families of origin and their use of touch in ministry. Each woman reported instances of therapeutic and non-therapeutic touching and the response of the parishioner-patient-client as well as their own responses to these instances. The study proved that touching can be an important and therapeutic tool in pastoral care.
