  • This pilot research project examined the developmental needs of ever singles, never married adults age 25 to 55, to determine if incomplete development in Erikson's stages of autonomy and intimacy contribute to their singleness. Sixteen women and eight men completed a questionnaire and a Firo B to assess levels of developmental functioning. In-depth interviews were conducted with five subjects. Evidence was found for the problems in both these stages including expression of feelings (intimacy) and a strong desire for freedom from outside demands (autonomy). Need for individual and group ministries were indicated.
