  • Research demonstrates that burnout is experienced by those who work in the fields of social service and care for people. The most recent research also demonstrates that burnout is a factor faced by those in the pastorate. There are specific causes of pastoral burnout and there are specific ways to prevent burnout and be restored from burnout. The burnout of the prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 19 is the framework for a ministry of preventing pastoral burnout. The intentional ministry of Yahweh addresses the burnout of Elijah by providing the rest, renewal, reconnecting, realigning and reengaging that he needs and so that Yahweh can recommission Elijah, His prophet.
