  • Preaching that best addresses the struggles and aspirations of first generation immigrants is characterized by a welcoming, gentle, empowering, and healing authority embodied in a narrative style of preaching. To test the validity of this thesis, I preached sermons on hope before different audiences gathered to celebrate different occasions. Some of the people were teary-eyed, a few felt energized, and several faces were radiant--responses indicating that a redemptive transformation took place in peoples' lives. The author assumes that the dynamics inherent in narrative preaching is instrumental in bringing about these responses that can generate hope. The welcoming, healing and empowering kind of authority engendered by narrative preaching also made these experiences a reality.
