  • Based on results of a two-year study of the performative aspects of preaching, it was found that participation in acting courses led to focussed, authentic and passionate preaching. Research included an investigation of acting techniques, observation of videotaped sermons, engagement with a Parish Project Group who assisted in the preparation and critique of sermons, and feedback achieved through questionnaires and group discussions. The psycho-physical nature of public performance can be described by four terms--atmosphere, connection, concentration, radiation. This 'performance quadrilateral' became a tool for assessing whether a preacher's unique voice and body were free to be fully expressive.
