  • This project examines the impact of shared religious identity on the therapeutic relationship. One hundred and twelve United Methodist Church members listened to a simulated counseling session. Positive and negative responses were measured by the Counselor Evaluation Scale developed for this project. Religious subjects reported higher positive and lower negative reactions when they believed the counselor to be a United Methodist minister or a Christian pastoral counselor than when they believed the counselor was a psychotherapist, but no difference was discovered between the ratings for the minister and the pastoral counselor. Implications for transference, countertransference and pastoral counseling are discussed.
