  • Black United Methodist churches are in spiritual and numerical decline. The author takes an historical-critical approach, and his research indicates that where Black Wesleyans have taken preaching seriously, embraced vibrant worship styles as a medium to tell their story, fostered lay education and involvement, and maintained a Christ-centered preferential option for the poor, the church continues to thrive from one generation to the next. The author's experience in the local setting has provided an opportunity to implement these growth models.
