  • This project appraised the extent of clergy depression. Mail surveys were sent to 200 Presbyterian Church in America clergymen (and wives), with 275 of the 400 returned. Seven hypotheses were tested. Sufficient variance of depressive tendencies with the public was not indicated, nor variance between clergy and wives. Correlation was not sufficiently associated with size of congregation, ministerial position, nor age. Correlation was significantly correlated to overall health and a network of supporting friends. When asked 'Do you feel depression is a problem in your life?', clergymen responded 2 per cent (wives 4 per cent) 'much,' and 17 per cent (27 per cent) 'some.' 10.4 per cent of the clergy reported having been treated or counseled for depression (wives 15 per cent).
