  • Modern Unitarian Universalism claims that its doctrines are compatible with modern scientific teaching. Free moral will is claimed by liberal religion to be a part of our human dignity. Modern evolutionary theory poses a serious challenge to this claim. The place of human moral freedom is called into question. The problem is to construct an adequate, meaningful doctrine of free moral will which is 'true' within an evolutionary framework. The theologies of Ralph W Burhoe and Henry N Wieman are reviewed to discover their doctrines of free moral will in light of evolutionary theory. They are found to be inadequate for liberal religion. The theology of John Dewey is suggested as promising for further research.
