  • This thesis considers the impact of television watching on the way people listen to sermons and how preachers can more effectively identify with today's television-saturated audiences. The theological foundation for this thesis is based on a study of various biblical characters and biblical teachings to specifically observe how God identifies with the hearers of his message. A review of available literature and interviews with experts revealed significant agreement on the pervasive influence of television on the lives of Canadians. The focus of this thesis is not on the content of television but the medium of television. This thesis attempts to zero in on why television is so successful at attracting hours of weekly attention from so many Canadians. It goes on from there to suggest what preachers can do to better attract the attention of their congregations in order to better communicate biblical truth. The findings, from this research, were then put to the test by means of a survey. Nineteen people were selected because of their expertise and surveyed to confirm the findings in the literature. They were specifically asked how preachers can adapt their preaching methods to better identify with their television-saturated audiences. All of the research and survey results form the basis of a three-hour seminar which helps preachers to appreciate the influence television has on their congregations and suggests ways that they can be more effective in reaching their audience.
