  • This study contends that new images of pastoral identity need to be addressed that take the North American cultural context into serious consideration. It is an attempt to develop pastoral images that will authentically engage the North American cultural context. Cultural changes have implications for the pastor and the ministry of the church. In this paper, three cultural denials are discussed. Materialism has led to the denial of transcendence; individualism has led to the denial of community; anti-intellectualism has led to the denial of thinking. Three cultural quests are addressed. The existential cry for meaning is seen in the quest for transcendence in society; the individualistic cry for belonging is observed in the quest for community; the multicultural cry for identity is seen in the quest for pluralism. This study offers four pastoral images for consideration: a Listening Conversationalist, a Prophetic Subversive, a Pedagogical Guide, and a Co-Sufferer. These pastoral images also have significance for those involved in teaching on the college level. Specifically, the image of the teacher as a Friend is addressed in this study and the implications of that image for the educational process.
