  • The central question of this thesis is: How and to what extent people do recover from the losses of divorce? Using attachment theory, grief studies, and family theory, the project views divorce, single parenthood, and remarriage as a process of mourning and recovery. Divorce both necessitates and interferes with the usual mourning process. Unfinished mourning alters expectations about remarriage and potentially hinders the formation of stepfamilies. Interviews with remarried couples and case material from the author's counseling experience illustrate the theory. Pastoral responses to divorce and remarriage and theological perspectives on stepfamilies are suggested.
