  • This study is designed to test the hypothesis that interaction with the poor, however briefly, contains transformational properties and can be interpreted using John Wesley's terminology as a means of grace. The particular subjects under investigation are 24 affluent American University students who chose to participate in an 'alternative spring break' to Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, Chiapas Mexico, Zambia or Vietnam. Relying on interviews and observation, the author concluded that these short impressions provided the students with an occasion for reexamination of their own lives and an opportunity for experiencing transcendence. Thus inherent in establishing a relationship with those living on the margin provide the setting for mediating new forms of spiritual awakening and growth--ushering in a new encounter with God.
