  • The sexualization of power within patriarchal social and religious structure has protected and perpetuated violence by men against women. Consequently many women experience long periods of spiritual darkness. Through individual entrance and exit interviews of seven women from Highland Park Presbyterian Church, small group interaction with them around creative rearticulation of women's stories from scripture and individual Ignatian style meditation exercises, research discloses that all the women experienced sexual abuse, forced isolation and economic dependence. Most had also experienced physical and verbal abuse. Their spiritual awakening, illumination and healing came through pursuing their calling, deep honesty and re-telling women's biblical stories.
