  • This project, an integrated reflection, proposes that a shaman, defined (by Joseph Campbell) as one who has personally encountered the Holy, is better equipped than a priest, defined as one who has received a tradition second-hand, to communicate the Christian myth to a secular society. It examines the shaman as known in primitive tribes, embodied in Jacob and Jesus, and experienced by Anton Boisen. It defines the issue of homosexuality and the clergy in this light. It interprets the Eucharist as a liturgical reenactment of shamanic initiation, and states the implications of shamanic ministry for the church.
