- Abstract
- The focus of this project is to determine how the role of the district superintendent can become a source of empowerment for the small membership church in the area of programming and involvement with significant ministries beyond the local church. The district superintendent is a key catalyst in the model. This document is part of a larger design in which the district superintendency is the bonding agent of denominational vitalization. The model consists of three district events designed for small membership congregations: confirmation retreat; Sunday school workshop and rally; and mission project in Haiti. All three events were designed by laity and clergy persons from small membership churches in the district with assistance from district and conference staff persons. The results showed that small membership churches will enthusiastically support ministries beyond the local church when they feel a sense of 'ownership in the product'.
