  • This dissertation studies the historical and societal roles of the Jewish family and synagogue, individually and as they relate to each other. Its ultimate concentration focuses on the role of ritual in the rite of passage as marked within contemporary American Reform Judaism known as Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah. The thesis of the project dissertation is that the Bar/Bat Mitzvah can constitute a key linkage between the synagogue and the family, in which Jewish values and Jewish family vitality can be sustained, and through which the synagogue and thus the Jewish community may be strengthened. The rabbi can play a key role in this linkage.
