  • This ethnographic case study attempted to develop an awareness of Christ's presence and action in the midst of a particular United Methodist congregation. In structuring teaching, regular worship, and focused discussions, a group of congregational leaders journeyed together through Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, noting their faith experiences and encouraging one another in faithful living. Through listening for God in their gathering together and daily living; through patient discernment that was willing to embrace paradox and remain open to newness; and through humble and, sometimes, courageous obedience to God's revealed word, they gained understanding of the life to which they are called, and both they and the congregation were empowered to be the continuing incarnation of Christ in the world.
