Abstract
  • This research project surveys the Great Awakenings in American religious history and proposes that the contemporary church can be revived by prayerfully drawing from their positive elements. The author examines four 'turning points' (the First and Second Great Awakenings, the Businessmen's Revival of 1857-58 and mid-twentieth century evangelism) in American religious history and discusses the relationship between spiritual revival and cultural engagement during periods of awakening. A lengthy discussion follows on how the twenty-first century church can benefit from understanding the past as she strategizes for the future.
