  • This project asserts that spoken word, a genre of poetry endemic to urban culture, is sacred art with value and purpose in sacred spaces of worship. The author recommends that worship leaders, planners, and preachers infuse spoken word urban worship centers so that those spaces might be more relevant and reflective of contemporary urban African American culture. To explore this notion, the author planned and executed a learning and worship experience that demonstrated and discussed spoken word as sacred art for sacred space. This work was received positively and resulted in subsequent opportunities to share spoken word in sacred space.
