  • Carl G. Jung's concept of the archetype discloses the possibility of understanding literature and myth as creative forces that shape our spiritual and psychological development. This dissertation investigates the three main versions of the legend of the Holy Grail, Perceval, Perlesvaus and the Queste del Saint Graal, for their archetypal descriptions of the Warrior (Perceval), Magician (Merlin), Lover (Lancelot) and King (Arthur). Modern examples are also given for these four archetypes--George S. Patton, Vincent van Gogh, C.S. Lewis and Dag Hammerskjold--as paradigms for the expression and spiritual possibilities for modern men. A church retreat model is also included in this paper.
