This project is a study of compact Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), which is practical theological education. It relates compact CPE to a rite of passage ritual, particularly the second phase known as 'communitas.' It compacts 400 hours of training into 27 days, as students learn pastoral care by doing it under supervision. They develop their pastoral identity and style and become aware of how their ministry affects the recipients thereof. The questions addressed in this study are: Is this process communitas, a ritual? Does it enhance learning? Why or why not?
