  • This integrative project was designed and implemented to develop a basis for an on-going laity shepherding program at the First Presbyterian Church of Hannibal, Missouri. Its theological justification comes from the fact that pastor and laity alike share in the shepherding ministry of Jesus Christ in the church. To both equip my present lay shepherds in the 'basics' of pastoral care and to motivate them to train, in turn, still more shepherds, I proceeded as follows: I led ten of these lay shepherds through a series of eight 'shepherding seminars' on the biblical/theological justifications for giving pastoral care; the four 'givens' of human life; the ten stages of grief; the differentiation of different types of depression; and the development of empathetic listening skills. At the conclusion of these studies, each of the now 'trained' shepherds was assigned some aspect of the aforementioned topics and asked to teach it to a small cadre of 'untrained' shepherds newly recruited from the congregation at large. In so doing, lay shepherds themselves actually trained other lay shepherds.
