  • This project discovers, names, and analyzes survival mechanisms used by traumatically injured or critically ill individuals in order to assist family members, health care providers, and pastoral caregivers in healing of body, mind, and spirit. Employing qualitative, descriptive, ethnographic research, the project interviews ill and injured persons in depth and develops a Coping Mechanism Assessment Tool (CMAT) to process the data from these interviews. The spiritual and religious foundations of these survivors provide many of the coping mechanisms that enable individuals to find peace of mind and healing with hope fueled by an attitude of survival.
