This paper argues that the concerns, thoughts, needs, and abilities of the children taught should set the agenda for Christian education. The writer argues that 'invitation' to play with the tradition is more important than 'indoctrination' with correct answers. The paper begins by examining the Scriptures and the history of interpretation to show that there is room for a wide variety of interpretations and approaches to the Scriptures. From there the paper examines developmental theories to highlight the nature of children and the gifts children bring to the study of the Christian tradition. Special emphasis is placed on the gift of imagination. Finally, these insights are brought together to suggest ways the whole congregational community can work together to invite everyone to bring their own special gifts and abilities to the task of making the faith their own.
