  • One factor in the decreasing membership of the United Methodist church is the unprecedented affluence following World War II. In this dissertation the author through research, experience, and evaluation has considered several evidences of affluence, some sources of, and results from it. The research shows that unchurched Americans are disproportionately white, young, educated, male, and affluent. Additionally, some theological emphases of United Methodism are presented with some suggestions for relating more effectively with people affected by affluence.
