  • The purpose of this project is two-fold: first to explain that clergy do not have to be interested in the complexities of alcoholism and drug abuse to be effective pastors and second, to provide practical methods that will help the minister to be efficient in dealing with and preventing chemical problems. This project suggests a suitable role and a proven model the minister can use to promote a parish program of chemical health. Acting as a catalyst, using the redemptive principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, the object is to enlist the enthusiasm of parishioners to create a fellowship where learning, sharing and growth can occur. The unique feature is that three diagnostic instruments are provided to identify chemical dependency. Once that problem is solved, treatment resources are suggested and a referral network is outlined.
