  • In many congregations, there is a problem securing teachers for Sunday school, mid-week and vacation Bible school programs. Much of this fear seems to arise from a feeling by lay members that they are inadequate to teach what they and the church believe. This paper explores this situation, and tries to provide some answers to empower these reluctant potential teachers. It also presents a program for training laity in the context, purpose and content of Christian religious education. The processes of emotional, cognitive, moral and faith development in individuals are explored. Several teaching and learning strategies are presented to enhance the effectiveness of teachers in a congregational setting. The importance of continuing teacher training events is emphasized. The conclusion of the paper is that the better informed and trained a teacher is, the more effective and happier they are as well.
