- Abstract
- Cancer is a universal phenomenon which cannot be excluded from what it means to live as well as to die. Highlighted is the process of transcending the cancer experience in patients, family members, friends, and caregivers. Interpersonal relationships, general systems theory, and the role of subsystems are outlined from childhood through late adulthood. Topics discussed include: psychosocial aspects of cancer; marital and sibling reactions; living beyond and with cancer; support groups; group therapy; palliative care; anticipatory grief; bereavement; and the experience of cancer within faith communities in terms of hope, suffering, pastoral and congregational support.
