  • The author researched how families cope with the chronic job-related absence of the fathers who work in southeast Alaska's commercial fishing industry. The author used this information to develp a theology of the family which adapts to the irregular schedules of such families. The theology is based on the concept of the covenant. It focuses on the strengthening of and development of the relationships in the family, rather than on the preservation of set roles. The family structure is seen as flexible and adaptive. The covenant between the family members and between the family and God is the most important factor that determines the family relationships.
