Abstract
  • Charles V. Gerkin, in The Living Human Document, laments the absorption of pastoral couseling ministry into psychotherapy to the point of loss of the pastor's roots in the Christian tradition and language. This project proposes that a dialogue between narrative therapy and narrative theology paves the way for the reappropriation by pastoral counseling of the Christian tradition and language; indeed, it demands it! Human being is constituted by narrative; when we change narratives, we change human being. Thus, the Christian narrative wields both psychological and theological power. The project moves toward a postliberal model of pastoral counseling and seeks to demonstrate its effectiveness in a case study from clinical practice.
