- Congregations whose membership has changed from program-size to pastoral-size can and do thrive. Using narrative methods, the researcher studied five Presbyterian congregations that are flourishing in the aftermath of decreased membership. Factors contributing to continued success include: excellent worship, attention to congregational fellowship and nurture, engagement in service to others beyond the congregation, a shared sense of congregational identity, a good fit between pastor and congregation, strong lay leaders, and sustainability, defined as enough money, enough members, and a good enough building so that neither the present nor future mission of the congregation is compromised.
