  • The first chapter examines some major preachers throughout history and describes how the hearers formed the preacher. The second chapter describes basic rhetorical principles, specifically found in Augustine's De Doctrina Christiana, showing how the character of the preacher makes preaching credible. The third chapter proposes three conversations that take place in the preaching act: the preparatory conversation, the homiletic conversation, and the reflective conversation. The fourth chapter describes the program that I developed in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for the preparation of deacons who preach. The final chapter offers a modest proposal for the future of preaching, especially the idea that the whole church preaches through the conversations proposed in this project.
