  • This paper considers the relationship of humor to issues of meaning and purpose in life. It stems from an observation that, when people are encouraged to laugh in therapy, they may be led to a new level of awareness that is important to the therapeutic process. Humor is not only a technique; it is also a paradigm for a pastoral approach to therapy. The main point of the project is that there is a relationship between a sense of humor and the quest for God. The psychodynamics of the humor experience parallel the dynamics of a religious orientation toward life.
