  • While prayer is vital to every aspect of the Christian life, both laity and clergy fail in its practice. A study of the nature of prayer reveals that its primary intent is communion with God, not the registering of requests. The task of this project was to lead the members of the Piedmont Park Church to develop stronger habits of personal prayer by deepening their understanding of its importance, potential and meaning. A prayer curriculum was applied during a six month period. Its seven parts included: sermons, meditations, prayer partners, mid-week services, week of prayer, video presentation and systematic pastoral prayer. Both the Piedmont congregation and a comparison group (who did not receive the curriculum) were surveyed before and after the curriculum to monitor any change within each group. While the Piedmont group indicated an increase in understanding the importance, potential and meaning of prayer, it indicated decline in actual practice. Conversely, the comparison group indicated a decline in understanding and an increase in practice. The length of the curriculum and lack of involvement by many members weakened the project.
