  • This thesis explores the role art and artistic perception have in proclamation today. It specifically examines visual art as that which not only helps preachers see the situation in which proclamation happens, but as that which also gives the preacher access to the metaphors, images and symbols that are bearers of what is essential to the Christian message. Methodology includes qualitative analysis of visual portrayals of Jesus and the crucifixion, and analysis of children's drawings of Jesus from the perspective of R Arnheim's psychology of artistic perception. Results indicate the importance of visual images but also their marginalized role in churches today.
