Abstract
  • The Air Force Protestant chaplain built congregational interest and enthusiasm by increasing the amount of lay leadership in the general Protestant worship service. For six consecutive Sundays at the Bolling Air Force Base Chapel Center, the usual amount of lay leadership was significantly increased by advanced preparation and enlisting volunteers from the congregation. Surveys taken before and after the experimental Sundays indicated the congregation liked the additional lay leadership, but not more than about ten minutes total; any more would make the service too long. The congregation became more interested and enthusiastic and attendance increased dramatically (28 per cent).
