Abstract
  • Dissatisfied with the traditional, business-oriented approach to church planning and programming widely practiced today, the author proposes that the Ignatian method of communal spiritual discernment is a possible alternative. He adapts it to the setting of a local church planning retreat. It is discovered that, although communal spiritual discernment is a viable alternative, it demands more personal and corporate preparation and skill in prayer and discernment than most congregations possess. For that reason it will probably not meet with widespread acceptance and use.
