  • Re-enchanting a deep symbol: becoming disciples of Jesus in a postmodern church
Abstrait
  • At Foreside Community Church, United Church of Christ, the corrosive forces of postmodernism have rendered becoming a disciple of Jesus meaningless. Drawing on the theology of Edward Farley and the concept of self-differentiation, the deep symbol of discipleship is re-enchanted through a small group process in which the pastor leads through authenticity and presence. Discipleship is newly understood as taking responsibility for defining one's own faith in the context of community. The pastor and laity move in new directions of response and service.
